SAE updates autonomous vehicle definitions

Launched in 2014, SAE’s definitions for self-driving vehicles have standardized vehicle development, categorizing everything from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (fully automated driving). In partnership with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the latest version of the standards, SAE J3016, is available for free with more clear and concise terminology as well as clarity for an international audience. Through the joint SAE/ISO joint working group, representatives from nine countries collaborated on the updates to create a document that’s more consistent for use across the global mobility community. https://www.iso.org/home.html; https://www.sae.org

Definition updates

Clarifies differences between SAE Level 3 (formerly conditional automation: automated systems can conduct driving tasks and monitor the driving environment, but the driver must be ready to retake control) and SAE Level 4 (high automation: autonomous systems can drive the vehicle and monitor road conditions; the human driver doesn’t need to take control, but the system can operate only in specific environments). Level 3 renamed automated chauffeuring, Level 4 vehicles may eliminate steering wheels and pedals.
Additional terms and definitions for two distinct remote support functions: remote assistance and remote driving.
Driver Support Systems name added for SAE Level 1, Level 2 automation.
