Cleveland, Ohio – Maintaining good relationships with customers demands on-time performance. In the automotive world, where late deliveries to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can translate into $100,000 per hour fines, shipping on time can be the difference between profit and loss.

One key technique to shipping on time is to eliminate errors from processes that require rework or time to track down flaws. Management executive systems (MES) with error checking can streamline that process and ensure first-run quality, eliminating shipping delays, says Andrew Robling, principal product manager for manufacturing and supply chain for Epicor Software Corp.

“Some OEMs have minimum process requirements (MPRs) that demand automating facilities as much as possible. OEMs have realized that when a human is involved, mistakes tend to happen,” Robling says.

Examples include:

  • Automated changeovers – by changing the enterprise resources planning (ERP) system part number based on what is actually running on the PLC, companies can avoid an operator busily reporting that they are making part A, when in fact the machine is reporting part B.
  • Wrong material – By scanning the material in the MES system, users can verify that it is the correct material for the part.

In addition to eliminating errors, another tactic to avoiding delays is managing inventory. By serializing inventory tracking, Robling says customers have been able to top 99% inventory accuracy levels, giving them confidence that raw materials are available and finishing product will leave the plant on time.
