FCA to move Jeep Cherokee production out of Ohio: Automotive News

Toledo plant to get new Jeep pickup when crossover vehicle leaves.

Toledo, Ohio – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will move the Jeep Cherokee out of its longtime home in Toledo but add a Jeep Wrangler-based pickup to the plant, Automotive News is reporting, based on an exclusive interview with FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne.

In the past, Marchionne has said the next generation of the Jeep Wrangler will need significant changes, possibly including an all-aluminum body – statements that had local officials worried that the iconic off-road capable vehicle might leave the plant.

Instead, the Toledo plant will focus on two body-on-frame vehicles – the Wrangler and a future pickup – while the unit-body Cherokee will move to either the plant that makes the Chrysler 200 sedan or the Dodge Dart compact. Modern, flexible plants can produce multiple unit-body vehicles on the same lines with minimal retooling.
