Cleveland, Ohio – Ford has begun production of 2L and 2.3L four-cylinder EcoBoost engines at its Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, two years after announcing an expansion of that facility.
Powering popular vehicles such as versions of the Mustang, Explorer, and Edge, the small, turbocharged engines are more powerful than the V-6 models they replace while offering the fuel economy of a four-cylinder model.
Ford’s Cleveland site has been the sole North American build location for EcoBoost models. That plant has made 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 engines since 2009 for use in larger vehicles such as the F-150 pickup. The company had been importing its smaller EcoBoost models from its Valencia, Spain plant.
”Cleveland Engine has been at the forefront of our plan to provide our customers with fuel-efficient, affordable engines,” says Bruce Hettle, vice president of North American manufacturing at Ford, at the Cleveland Auto Show. “The hardworking team at Cleveland Engine is proud to build two of the most technologically advanced engines on the market today.”
Announced in 2013, the plant upgrades for the new engine lines included $200 million in new equipment at 450 added jobs.
